Wendy Waring

From Northern Ireland to the North Island!

I have recently moved to Port McNeill with my husband, 2 daughters and our little dog, Rosie – half way across the world – as my husband was invited to take up the position of Pastor in Port McNeill Baptist Church. Ireland’s weather system is very similar to the Island and with such a friendly community, we have felt right at home already!

I have taught Art and Creative Studies for 25 years in Ireland, both North and South within Further and Higher Education colleges and in the community. I gained my BA (Hons) Degree in Fine Craft Design – Embroidery and went on to also complete my Masters in Learning & Teaching in the University of Ulster in 2001.

After inspiring students for many years teaching drawing, painting, printmaking, textiles, mixed media, etc. I now have the opportunity to explore and experiment with my own art techniques. I am beginning to build a body of work inspired by the incredible designs of Creation as I am captivated by the spectacular landscapes, seashore areas, creatures and uniquely beautiful buildings and dwellings of the North Island and Vancouver Island as a whole.

I love exploring layers of colour, texture and tonal variations through mixed media, watercolours, acrylic paint, black pen, silk painting, felt making, free machine and hand embroidery techniques. I often incorporate fabrics, local newspapers, fragments of envelopes, sand or found objects into my work to capture a small piece of the location or moment in time within the piece. My family tease me about taking too many photographs, but there is just SO MUCH TO SEE!!
