Artist’s Bio

Alert Bay artist, Joan E. Stone, works mainly in painting, drawing and printmaking. Subjects are recognizable, yet not rigidly realistic. Joan uses materials at hand: watercolours, acrylic and oil paints, conté crayon, graphite and beeswax, often blending drawing and painting in one image. Shells, flowers and other natural objects are favourite subjects, yet the artist is most drawn to the human face, returning to seek both the light upon and the light within. Working and reworking the image; the original form may be partly or totally obscured. Traces of this process are often visible in the completed project. This “becoming” is the primary focus and motivation of the artist.
